The Transactional Nature of Relationships: A Journey of Personal Realization

In the vast tapestry of life, I’ve come to acknowledge a profound truth: the world operates on a transactional basis. Initially, I believed friendships were built on the foundation of camaraderie, trust, and mutual support. However, as time passed, a gradual realization dawned upon me – many relationships are driven by what one can gain, be it emotional support, economic benefits, or social stature.

In this interconnected web of human interactions, it’s evident that people often seek to become indispensable and relevant, thus making themselves more likable and saleable. We go to great lengths to enhance our stature, whether through educational pursuits, acquiring titles, or climbing the societal ladder. Stature appears to be the currency that defines our relevance in the eyes of others. Yet, it’s disheartening to note that when this stature diminishes, so does the circle of friends and sometimes even family.

True friendship, I’ve come to understand, transcends this transactional paradigm. It’s about connection, a deep resonance that defies the boundaries of mere gain. Many invaluable friendships crumble because of our inherent tendency to view them solely through the lens of personal gain.

Let’s delve into the intricate fabric of this transactional reality through illustrative examples. Consider the friend who always seeks your company when times are tough, drawing emotional strength from your presence. But when the tide shifts and you are the one in need, their availability suddenly wanes. This scenario portrays the essence of a relationship transaction – giving and taking, but only when it benefits the other party.

Moreover, in our African context, the essence of friendship extends far beyond a mere transaction. It’s deeply rooted in communal bonds, shared experiences, and genuine care for one another. It’s about being present, irrespective of gains or losses.

I’ve come to regard friendships as seasons, each serving a purpose in the narrative of my life. I cherish these friendships as divine gifts for the particular season I find myself in. The Most High, in His infinite wisdom, graces us with companions who complement and support us in the specific phases of our journey.

In conclusion, the world may often seem transactional, but true relationships defy this norm. It’s about connection, mutual understanding, and unwavering support. Embracing the essence of genuine friendship entails seeing beyond personal gain, valuing the connection, and nurturing it for what it truly is – a treasure beyond transactions, for a lifetime or a season.

Indeed, the richness of life lies not in what we gain, but in the connections we foster and the souls we touch along the way.
