Building a Lasting Marriage

In the tapestry of life, my journey through marriage has been a testament to the enduring love and wisdom I inherited from my parents, specifically my father. Their 29-year-long union served as a guiding light, shaping my ideals and principles for a successful marriage.

Learning from the Past: A Father’s Legacy

My father, a beacon of strength and wisdom, instilled in me the essence of family values. From prayer and provision to guidance and protection, his example laid the foundation for my understanding of the commitment marriage demands. Solving internal issues, a skill learned through observation, became a cornerstone in navigating the intricacies of married life.

Agreement Before Unity: Biblical Foundations

Drawing from Amos 3, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” I embraced the idea of agreement before unity. The essence of compatibility became evident as my then-girlfriend, now wife, resonated with 90% of my convictions. Too often, marriages falter because of hastily made decisions, neglecting the importance of shared beliefs.

Unequal Yoking: A Call for Spiritual Alignment

In adherence to 2 Corinthians 6:14, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers,” the significance of spiritual alignment cannot be overstated. Seeking a partner who shares your faith ensures a foundation rooted in common values, diminishing the risk of fundamental disagreements that may arise.

Adultery: A Lurking Threat

The specter of adultery, fueled by the lack of compatibility, looms large over marriages. Marrying someone without shared beliefs can lead to feelings of being incompatible, a precursor to infidelity. The biblical warning in Hebrews 13:4 underscores the severity of straying from the sanctity of marriage.

Privacy in the Public Age: A Shield for Marriage

Reflecting on the story of Pascal Tokodi and Grace Ekirapa, I am reminded of the importance of privacy. The social media spectacle of relationships can create unnecessary pressure. My mantra became clear: date in private, marry in private, and raise your family in private. This shields the sacredness of the marital bond from external influences and preserves the sanctity of the family.

The Power of Communication: Bridging the Gap

Communication, often underestimated, emerges as a vital component in sustaining a marriage. Acknowledging my initial shortcomings, I learned to express my thoughts and feelings openly. Ephesians 4:15 guides me – “Speak the truth in love” – emphasizing the necessity of transparent communication in bridging the gap between two individuals evolving together.

In conclusion, the Christian perspective on marriage encapsulates a journey of shared beliefs, spiritual alignment, privacy, and effective communication. By intertwining these principles, couples can navigate the challenges of married life with grace and fortitude, ensuring a union blessed by the Most High. May our marriages be a testament to His enduring love, a beacon for others to follow.
