Many ask why I frequently compare the embattled Kenyan President with King Ahab. Numerous aspects of William Ruto’s presidency echo the reign of King Ahab.
When William Ruto campaigned for the presidency from 2021 to the end of 2022, he portrayed himself as a “church” candidate. For the first time in Kenya, the church openly declared its candidate. Ruto even established a charter with the church, outlining promises he would fulfill to them once in office.
However, once in power, much like Ahab and Jezebel, Rachel Ruto, the First Lady, formed a group of 100 intercessors to pray for the country and the operations of the Statehouse. Similarly, Jezebel had 400 prophets who told her and Ahab what they wanted to hear (1 Kings 18:19).
Like Ahab, William Ruto disregards the counsel of true prophets of God, preferring only those who speak what pleases him (1 Kings 22:8). We have witnessed foreign pastors visiting Kenya to “pray” for the nation, with claims that Ruto’s leadership has brought revival. Recently, Pastor Benny Hinn made such a proclamation. Yet, only a visitor would believe this lie. Under Ruto’s reign, Kenya has faced unprecedented judgment: severe road accidents, devastating floods, and the destruction of homes leaving many homeless. This mirrors Ahab and Jezebel’s killing of Naboth and seizing his land (1 Kings 21).
In response to Ruto’s selective hearing, God has sent the Gen-Zs, akin to Micaiah, to reveal the truth to the king—that he is naked. Despite their warnings, Ruto, like Ahab, fights against a divinely orchestrated war (1 Kings 22:17-28). God has already written on the wall, “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin.” His reign is found wanting (Daniel 5:25-28). Unfortunately, God judges Ruto harshly, so his family will also partake in this judgment (1 Kings 21:21-24).
God has taken charge of Kenya’s affairs, and the Gen-Zs’ push will not end until God’s purpose is fulfilled. As God used Micaiah to speak the truth to Ahab, He now uses the Gen-Zs because today’s church, aligned with the government, cannot help Kenya. Just as God judged Ahab and Jezebel for their idolatry, so will He judge William and Rachel Ruto.
The Bible states that Ahab was one of Israel’s weakest kings (1 Kings 16:30-33). Similarly, Ruto, despite his outward wickedness—using police to kill peaceful protestors and make others disappear—reveals his weakness through his actions. He has compromised Kenya’s sovereignty to the West, particularly the IMF, World Bank, and the USA. But the end of this oppression is near.
What should Kenyans do? Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” The unfolding events in our country represent both physical and spiritual warfare. We must pray for our Jehus and Micaiahs—our Gen-Zs. Let us continue advocating for righteousness through good governance and justice. God will revisit all the injustices Kenyans have faced since independence, leading to repentance, recompensation, restitution, and the long-awaited revival (Isaiah 1:17).
