Have you ever found yourself in a situation where all you had was lost—business, contracts, family—leaving you alone and vulnerable? Many of us, in one way or another, have experienced such moments. Our health might have declined, or we might have lost a job or a loved one. Yet, in those moments of despair, our Heavenly Father often sends someone we least expect to help us move to a better place.
A profound example of this is found in 1 Samuel 30. When David and his men returned to Ziklag after three days, they discovered that the Amalekites had raided their city, burned it, and taken their families captive. In their grief, David’s men turned against him, blaming him for their losses. Despite having a strong army capable of pursuing the Amalekites, David chose to seek God’s counsel before taking action.
1 Samuel 30:7-8 recounts David’s decision to consult God through the priest Abiathar. David asked, “Should we pursue these raiders? Can we catch them?” God responded, “Go after them. You will catch them, and you will certainly rescue your families.” With divine assurance, David and his 600 men set out.
As they approached their enemy, they encountered an Egyptian boy, a servant of the Amalekites. Instead of ignoring him, David’s men provided him with food and water. In gratitude, the boy led David to the Amalekite camp. Following God’s guidance and the boy’s help, David’s men successfully rescued their families and reclaimed all that had been taken.
This story illustrates why David is described in Acts 13:22 as “a man after God’s own heart.” Instead of relying solely on his strength, David sought divine direction and valued even the seemingly insignificant Egyptian boy, who became pivotal in their victory. It reminds us that God often places unlikely helpers in our path to lead us out of despair.
As God instructed Moses to bless the Israelites, I declare these blessings upon you from Numbers 6:24-26:
“‘“The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”’
